Yeh I have to agree too, what's the *BEST* thing to read first... like when I used wordpress for the first time, I found a handy guide that showed you everything step-by-step to make a custom theme (not on the wordpress site, but a user's blog.' Does Crystal Space have anything similar?

Some good places to start are in the CS's manual:
for CS 1.4:
- the various components of a CS scene:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual-1.4/World-Components.html
- the tutorials:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual-1.4/Tutorials.html
- the test and demo applications (non up-to-date overview here:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual-1.4/Applications-Overview.html
)
for trunk version:
- the various components of a CS scene:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual/World-Components.html
- the tutorials:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual/Tutorials.html
- the test and demo applications (more up-to-date overview here:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual/Applications-Overview.html
)
There are also some tutorials on the website:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/main/Tutorials
You can start by modifying some test and demo applications. The 'simple1' and 'simple2' are good choices for that.
You can also add some new textures/models/shaders. If you Google a bit you can find many free ressources. There is a forum post about that topic:
