I'd like to ask two questions:
1. What is the optimal poly count for detailed models in CS, and
Depends fully on your hardware. CS has nothing to do with that. So pick whatever modern games use on your type of hardware.
Personally I think somewhere between 2000 and 5000 is probably good.
2. Does CS smooth cal3d models during the rendering?
