I download Crystal Space and when I try to open it it says I have to select from a program list because it does not know what kind of file it is.

You should get winRAR (I'm assuming you're using Windows). It can open many compresion types including .tar. http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250-10007677.html?part=dl-winrar&subj=dl&tag=buttonIt says that some features will be disabled after the 40-day trial ends, but I doubt anything you need will be disabled. After the trial is over, however, you do get a prompt reminding you to register every time you use the program. But it's not any worse than what winZip does, so it's cool.

I can open it with Win-RAR and 7-Zip, but when I do it takes me to a bunch of strange words and numbers, (I think I got the wrong thing or something).

Those programs are used to extract the contents of the file. You extract it all to a directory then compile it using a C++ compiler, that will create the executables for the demos provided with the engine for you to run.

Is there a suitable walk-through for this? Perhaps I'm such a newbie that I'm missing the obvious.
I appreciate ANY help...

Does the CS download have any built-in installers? Aparently not. What compiling engine should I download? Is that what the WinGS or MSYS (or whatever they're called) are?
Thanks for your patience with all of us rookies.

If you want to download Crystal Space, just download it through the CVS.
