I was wondering how I could achieve a glow effect around a sphere or other object?  I want a selected object appear selected by having it glow around the edges or radiate light or something to that effect.  How could I go about doing this?  Thanks.

The easy solution would be to have a billboard pass through the centre of the object with transparency, that way no matter what direction you look at the object, the outline always has a "glow" so to speak.

So there would be a plane that always faces the user, extending out from the center of the sphere with transparency?  How could I make a circular plane?

It wouldn't need to be circular. Just a texture with a circular glow on it, and draw it using additive blending.
