Yes, you *really* should get the real 1.2. That download page contains many versions. You need to know exactly which zip file it was that you downloaded. Can you check the name?

The file I downloaded is called crystalspace-src-1.2.1.zip

Well then I have no clue. But the error you got can't be from 1.2.

OK!   I must have downloaded two versions of CS.   I've now found the right one (1.2.1) and successfully compiled it.   Walktest is much better - no more artifacts!
