Couple of things to know before you post:
- When you post something, don't use subjects such as
"plz help"
,
"i need help with this"
or
"can anyone help me?"
.
Be more specific
; instead write something like
"Need help with memory management"
.
- Obviously, do
not
start a flame war. If you think of horrible comments, just swallow it and 'smile' =D
- Please post in the correct forum, the General Discussion forum should not have support topics.
- Please search the forums for questions that have already been answered before posting.
There'll be more in the future, other admins or moderators are welcome to add more, if it's fair.

Things to Check Before You Post

Things to check before you post:
Did you set the CRYSTAL and CEL environment variables correctly? Can you `cd` into them? CRYSTAL and CEL need to be set when running external apps.
What version of Crystal Space / CEL are you using? CVS or stable? Bear in mind CVS usually has most problems licked and most bugs ironed out, but it does go through rough patches at times. Use the -D parameter to CVS to back up a day at a time if you're hitting some compile-time errors or are looking for more stable versions with the most recent bug fixes.
In Windows, did you install MingW first and
then
MSYS? Are you sure? MSYS has to know about MingW at install time.
Are you using GCC 4.0? It's crazy. Try backing up a version.
Last, but not least, have you read the documentation (at least up to the tutorials) and read thru some of the community articles? They're located at
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Documentation
and
http://community.crystalspace3d.org/
, respectively. Give 'em a read. You'll be glad you did.

Note that the CVS `-D' flag is "sticky", which means that it stays in effect even if you just type "cvs update" again. To return to present day after warping back to some previous date, use the -A flag: "cvs update -A -P -d"

Another thing to check:
Do you have an older (or remnants of an older) version of CrystalSpace, cal3d or CEL installed somewhere?

Can i make a mmorpg with CS?
Yes... planeshift is already a mmorpg with CS.
If there are any more "Can CS make a mmorpg" they will be put into a single topic.

...along those same lines: CrystalSpace is not an application. It's a set of libraries. The .zip file you download or the CVS files you checkout do not constitute an application. You will have to compile stuff. CrystalSpace isn't an out-of-the-box editor to create a game (although
CrystalBlend
will come close), it's an engine comprised of several libraries that let you build a stand-alone application.

Question: I use the Microsoft Visual Studio 6, and i get errors while compiling what is going on?
Version 6 of this compiler is out-dated and no longer follows the C++ standard which often causes ugly work-arounds to work with the rest of the compilers, now that Microsoft is offering a free version, it is reconmmended you update to it.
The download page for the Express editions is:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/
For C++ development (used by CS), you will also need to download and install the Windows Platform SDK. Be sure to follow the installation instructions precisely:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualc/usingpsdk/
