Herer is some xml code to define a mesh:

<meshobj name="Mesh00">
<plugin>crystalspace.mesh.loader.thing</plugin>
<params>
<v x="43" y="-4.5" z="-43" />
<v x="43" y="-4.5" z="-43" />
<v x="21.4" y="-4.5" z="-43" />
<v x="21.4" y="-4.5" z="-43" />
<v x="21.4" y="-4.5" z="-21.4" />
<v x="21.4" y="-4.5" z="-21.4" />
<v x="43" y="-4.5" z="-21.4" />
<v x="43" y="-4.5" z="-21.4" />
<material>sqr</material>
<p name="up">
<v>3</v> <v>7</v> <v>6</v> <v>2</v>
</p>
<p name="north">
<v>1</v> <v>5</v> <v>7</v> <v>3</v>
</p>
<p name="east">
<v>5</v> <v>4</v> <v>6</v> <v>7</v>
</p>
<p name="south">
<v>4</v> <v>0</v> <v>2</v> <v>6</v>
</p>
<p name="west">
<v>0</v> <v>1</v> <v>3</v> <v>2</v>
</p>
<p name="down">
<v>0</v> <v>4</v> <v>5</v> <v>1</v>
</p>
</params>
</meshobj>

As far as I understand the "p" numbers represent the polygons, but what do the numbers mean?
And how do you get them?
