Crystal Space is a mature, full-featured Software Development Kit (SDK) providing real-time 3D graphics for applications such as games and virtual reality. It is free (LGPL) and cross-platform (Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X).
The project encompasses two main components and one project putting things together:
Crystal Space — A modular, configurable, and extensible rendering engine supporting OpenGL and advanced features such as shaders and lighting systems, physics, 3D sounds, animation blending, foliage, terrain, virtual file system, physical peripherals, and more.
CEL — Entity system supporting higher-level functionality, such as runtime package environment (CELstart), generic event system, avatar and camera management, artificial intelligence (behavior trees, path finding, neural networks and genetic algorithms), vehicles, and more.
Project Ares — Based on Crystal Space and CEL, the Ares Project aims to be a full featured 3D Game Creation Kit. Create assets using Open Source projects like Blender and GIMP and then load them into AresEd to make fully featured games. |

An introduction for potential future Google Summer of Code students has been posted: https://sourceforge.net/p/crystal/discussion/gsoc/ - 07:47, 25 February 2014: GoogleSummerOfCode2014
Crystal Space was again accepted for Google Summer of code 2014! (http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2014). Google Sumer of Code is a yearly event where Google gives students a chance to do a paid summer job for Open Source projects. So if you are a student and are interested in earning a bit of money during the summer then you can apply for any of the 177 accepted projects. More specifically you can apply for Crystal Space. You can apply (both as a mentor or as a student) at the Crystal Space Google Summer of Code site (http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org2/google/gsoc2014/crystal). From there you can also visit the ideas page. But of course you are free to suggest your own ideas too. I would especially like to see ideas related to the AresEd project for example.Discussion about Google Summer of Code can be done on our mailing lists or forums: Community
We're looking forward to working with you!

I am planning to start an Indie game project. The plan is to go commercial but keep all assets and source code free. I'm looking for people to help me with this. Artists and coders. Read all about it here on my blog:
