  • 06:19, 9 June 2012: News Android Development

I just acquired an ASUS Transformer Tablet with Tegra 3 processor. I've seen a few 3D games on it (demos and free games) and performance is unbelievable. I'm currently busy experimenting with the development options for this platform and it seems very good indeed. The normal development language for Android is Java but it is also possible to make native apps in C++ using the NDK. Specifically for the Tegra processor you can get a customized version of the NDK and SDK from nvidia directly which is easier to set up. It works on windows and linux.

Using these tools it should be possible to make a working port of Crystal Space on Android. Especially Android devices with Tegra type processors or higher should be able to run pretty powerful Crystal Space games but I'm hoping that older processors can also use it a bit.

So what is my current dream? You all know that I'm working on AresEd. I would *love* to be able to develop Android 3D games using AresEd. The idea would be that users can install Ares as an application launcher for Ares specific games. AresEd itself would probably not run on the Android but at least the Ares game player should.

So I'm trying to find people to help me with this. I will certainly work on this but I can't do this alone as this needs testing on various devices and there are also areas in CS that I'm not that comfortable with (like shaders and stuff like that).

Let me know if you're interested.

  • 16:28, 18 January 2012: News CS CEL and Ares future Call for help and donations

Dear CS, CEL and Ares developers, users, supporters and all,

In the fast pace world of 3D, hardware and gaming. It is difficult to keep up and progress without the assistance and generosity of others.

CS, CEL and Ares are three core projects that now and in the future, bring you the ability to create games and other applications with a degree of ease and flexibility. Doing this though creates it's challenges. As Open Source projects, we survive on peoples generous donation of time and their passion which is so great they purchase much of the hardware to progress the projects from their own pockets.

We are reaching out to the community and wider to assist us if you can and reduce the burden from individuals and progress as we wish to. In the future we wish to:

    - Better support Apple Mac OS X
    - Add Android support
    - Add Apple iOS support
    - Add GLSL and GLES

We would also like to be able to purchase up to date versions of software for example Visual Studio for long standing developers. Other uses of any financial donations would be decided by concensus amongst the development team as they are at present.

As projects we are always looking for new people to help in all areas of the projects.

If you are able to offer your time to any of the projects please contact us via the discussion or development mailing lists.

To subscribe and mail to the list, please see:

    /docs/online/manual/Mailing-Lists.html

As projects we are in desperate need of hardware and software to bring support and features up to date then progress, and as a team of individuals we can only do this via donations in the future.

If you are able to make a donation of money or hardware. Please contact the founder of the CS, CEL and Ares projects:

    Jorrit Tyberghein - Email: jorrit.tyberghein@gmail.com

    Regards

    Phil Wyett

Crystal Space and Crystal Entity Layer release manager.

  • 07:58, 17 October 2011: News Project Ares

The Ares Project is looking for C++ developers and 3D/2D/sound artists! Ares is a new ambitious project managed by Jorrit Tyberghein. The project is divided in three parts:

    • A Game Editor called AresEd. This will be the tool that the game designer(s) can use to make games. It is going to be a general tool so it is useful for more then just Ares. This tool is currently already functioning but a lot of work is still needed to make it really usable.
    • A Game Player that will be able to play games made with AresEd. This tool will be heavily based on CEL. Most of the game logic and coding has already been done on this part of the project.
    • An actual game based on the above tools. Check out the Ares Project page to learn more about this game!

  • 07:36, 17 October 2011: News Free Game Alliance
Free Game Alliance Take a look at the Free Game Alliance, it's a very interesting initiative started to promote open development and open source software. One of the projects, PlaneShift, uses Crystal Space, so we are indirectly part of the Alliance as well! The idea behind the initiative is to selects one project for each genre, example FPS, strategy, car racing, mmorpg, with the objective of focusing new developers on those projects and creating one best in class open source project in each category.

The following games are currently present in the alliance:

    • MegaGlest: A 3D real-time strategy (RTS) game, where you control the armies of one of seven different factions.
    • PlaneShift: A Role Playing Game immersed into a 3D virtual fantasy world. PlaneShift is made by a group of RPG enthusiasts who decided to make the impossible: a mmorpg built from scratch!
    • Rigs of Rods: Started as a physic engine, and then evolved in a playable game! What makes Rigs of Rods different to most simulators is its unique soft-body physics: vehicles, machines, objects, etc. are simulated in real-time as flexible soft-body objects.
    • The Battle for Wesnoth: A turn-based tactical strategy game with a high fantasy theme. Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans.
    • Xonotic: a fast-paced first-person shooter providing addictive arena shooter gameplay which is all spawned and driven by the community itself.

  • 15:03, 14 March 2011: CS in an Immersive Virtual Environment

The Electrical engineering department of the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Electronics and Applied Mathematics at Université catholique de Louvain has used Crystal Space in its developments for a couple of years. To meet some of the requirements of their work, they have already improved several features of CS such as the Bullet physics plugin and the new animated mesh.

This research department is now starting a long term project on the setup of an Immersive Virtual Environment to be used by psychologists for experimentation and therapy, and they have chosen Crystal Space as the game engine that will simulate and render the virtual environments. Hopefully we can keep seeing more great improvements to CS from them over the next few years...

A new blog has been started that will try to regularly present the developments made in CS for the setup of this Immersive Virtual Environment. See here for more info.

  • 13:05, 17 September 2010: CS PS Collaboration

Today we have a great announcement to make! During the past 8 years the PlaneShift team and the Crystalspace team collaborated closely, sharing knowledge, ideas and code. The two teams have been working together in many occasions, and quite a number of the PlaneShift developers have contributed to the CS codebase in multiple ways improving the engine. Just to mention the most important developments: decals, cal3d support, 3dsmax exporters, mac osx support, sound engine, billboards, terrain alpha and more. The PlaneShift levels have been used (and are still) as a benchmark for identifying bottleneck and needed performance improvements. This allowed a better tuning on the engine for production use. PlaneShift is the biggest active project created with CrystalSpace and to strengthen even more this collaboration, we are happy to announce that Jorrit Tyberghein has been elected as Director in the Board of Atomic Blue, the non-profit corporation created many years ago to support the PlaneShift project. In his new role, Jorrit will be part of all major decisions related to PlaneShift and will ensure a profitable collaboration between the two teams. It's great to see two open source projects teaming up! But the road is still steep and we need all possible help from the community to make Crystal Space the best open source 3D engine and PlaneShift the best free mmorpg! Join us today!

  • 18:22, 29 May 2007: Commercial Support

Starting today a group of Crystal Space developers are starting to provide commercial support options for Crystal Space. We are called CrystalSquared (or CS^2). The idea is to enable people to get more extensive support then what they can usually get for free at the moment. Also it is important to stress that free support for CS will in no way be diminished by this. You will get the same amount of free support that you are already getting right now (and even more if we can manage :-)

For more information about this commercial support option you can visit the CrystalSquared site at: www.crystalsquared.com

We finally got our blogs back! Especially for the upcoming Google Summer of Code we needed the blogs back that we had back with the old Crystal Space site. We also have a summary site where you can easily read all new blog entries as they appear. Currently it is also listing a few older entries (which it shouldn't) but I'm sure we solve that soon enough.

A very important link for students is the Google Summer of Code FAQ. You can see there that the deadline for student applications is 24 March! So don't hesitate. If you have some idea that is not on our list already then please talk to us about it first to increase your chance of being accepted.
